ZX Spectrum: THE 100 BEST GAMES all years 1982-1992, episode 1/11 - 1982

1982 was the year for the release of the ZX Spectrum. It was released on 23 April 1982 in two models - one with 16 KB of RAM and one with 48 KB of RAM, and these computers did certainly not lack support. More games were released for the 16k than for the 48k this year. Many of these games were surprisingly great looking and playable, but a lot suffered from some awkward and un-redefinable keyboard controls. O, P, Q, A, M had not become the standard keyboard controls yet.

Here we take a look at the 100 best games released in 1983 for the ZX Spectrum 16k and 48k computers. 1983 was a year with great support for both of these computers. This was the year with the biggest support for the 16k machine, but the 48k was catching up, and almost the same amount of software were released for both machines. The ZX Interface 2, an interface with two joystick ports, was released in September 1983.

We check out the 100 best games released in 1984 for the ZX Spectrum 16k and 48k computers. This year the 48k machine is taking the lead, with much most software produced for 48k than for 16k. The use of the extra 32k RAM in most games is easy to see in the overall games quality, which has raised magnificent compared to 1982 and 1983.

This year support for joystick interfaces was also implemented in almost all releases, and according to Spectrum Computing; 1984 was the year where most games were released for the ZX Spectrum.

Also a a pleasant surprise for the people who did not like the rubber keyboard came in October 1984 with the release of the ZX Spectrum+, and it was possible to buy just the +case for upgrading, if you had already bought a rubber model.

We are in 1985, checking out the 100 best games released for the ZX Spectrum 16k and 48k computers. This was the last year with a reasonable amount of releases for the 16k machine, but it was easy to get the 16k machine upgraded to 48k with a 32k RAM kit. Instead the 128k machine was released at the end of the year, and a few extended versions of games introducing the AY sound chip were released. The ZX Spectrum 128 was developed by Sinclair Research and Investrónica, and it was released in Spain (with keypad) before it was released in the UK (without keypad).

We take a look at the 100 best games released for the ZX Spectrum 48k and 128k computers in 1986. The developers now start implementing AY music in some of the games, and an AY-interface for the 48k became a popular add-on.

1986 was also the year Sir Clive Sinclair sold the entire Sinclair Computer Product range to Amstrad. This was mainly caused by poor sales of TV80, Sinclair QL and the Sinclair C5 electric vehicle. These failures created financial difficulties for Sinclair.

Amstrad's first Spectrum model was the grey ZX Spectrum +2. It went into production in July 1986 and was presented on 4 September 1986 at the Personal Computer World Show in London.

The year is 1987 and we check out the 100 best games. Amstrad bought the ZX Spectrum production in 1986 and new models were released in 1987: ZX Spectrum +2A (with build in tape deck) and ZX Spectrum +3 (with build in 3" disk drive and CP/M). Production of 48k models were stopped in 1986, and only already produced 48k models that were on stock were sold. Amstrad only made 128k models.

The 100 best games from 1988 is to see here. In 1988 Amstrad also came with the models: ZX Spectrum +2B and ZX Spectrum +3B. Many of Amstrad's Spectrum machines were sold in gaming packs with game lots, joysticks, light guns etc. Most popular was probably the James Bond package that came with games made exclusively for a ZX Spectrum with light gun.

Here we go, checking out the 100 best games from 1989. No new Spectrum models came from Amstrad this year, and no more would come. All their different models had been introduced 1986-1988: ZX Spectrum +2, ZX Spectrum +2A, ZX Spectrum +2B, ZX Spectrum +3, ZX Spectrum +3B.

Originally Amstrad planned to introduce an additional disk interface for the +2A/+2B called the AMSTRAD SI-1, but this never appeared. If this external disk drive was added, the +2A/+2B would change to a +3 on the system OS menu.

Here we go with the 100 best games from 1990! This year production of the ZX Spectrum +3 ceased in December, believed to be because of Amstrad relaunching their CPC range. Production of the ZX Spectrum +2B continued, as it was believed not to be in competition with other computers in Amstrad's product range. The ZX Spectrum +2B is now the only Spectrum model still in production.

Checking out the 100 best games from 1992. A quite descent amount of games was still available in 1992, but Amstrad ceased production of the ZX Spectrum +2B this year. Most software houses skipped the ZX Spectrum after 1992. The PC was getting quite powerful and popular now, in 1992 titles like Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of Destiny, Dune II, Powermonger and Utopia came out, and in 1993 Doom were released. Also in 1992 new computer models like Amiga 1200, Amiga 4000 and Atari Falcon 030 were released.
