MAME 0.255 31 May 2023

As you may have expected, it’s MAME 0.255 release day! Following on from April’s breakthroughs, Namco System 10 MP3 audio is now supported, making Golgo 13: Juusei no Requiem, Seishun Quiz Colorful High School and Nice Tsukkomi fully playable. On top of that, Point Blank 3 and Gunbalina now run, and the later version of Gamshara has been dumped correctly. If you like rhythm games, more than half a dozen Pop'n Music titles are now working. Lots of LCD and LED games were added this month, including two Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games from Konami, Super Goal Keeper from Tronica, and two sports-themed games from Tomy.

Remember the Motorola 88000 CPU architecture? It’s OK if you don’t, it never achieved the same market penetration as its rivals MIPS, SPARC and POWER. But that makes it really cool that two Omron workstations based on 88100 CPUs, the Luna 88K and Luna 88K², are now working. This release also adds support for the Psion HC 100 series of hand-held computers from the early 1990s. These devices found their niche as portable data collection terminals. Support for the ZX Spectrum’s many descendants continues to grow, with the Sprinter Sp2000 arriving this month.

→ NOWSZY [Arcade] PFEMame 3.9.2 05/10/26

pfeMame 3.9.2 5/10/26

  • Removed some excessive use of the message window flasher if alert flashing is enabled.
  • Fixed the status bar messages not showing on Linux while the ROMs database is built.  The progress bar was a separate window laid over the whole status bar, and on Linux it covered the messages.  It now has its own place in the status bar next to the message, and the messages update from the start, including while the machine list is first read from MAME.
  • The Please Wait window is back when the ROMs database is built or refreshed.  It closes once the progress bar takes over.
  • In the ROM download source window, any source that has credentials stored is now ticked by default, along with archive.org.  Adding credentials for a source also ticks it.
  • Fixed the message window alert flash on Linux.  Only the background around the text flashed; now the whole window does, as on Windows.
  • Fixed the retroroms.net ROM source never finding anything with older versions of MAME.  retroroms only keeps the latest MAME set, so pfeMAME now uses the set for your MAME version if it is there and otherwise the latest set.  The credentials Test button does the same.  ROMs from a newer set are marked as such in the results and are still checked against your MAME before you download them.
  • Searching for a ROM online now shows each step in the status bar and the Please Wait window (connecting, logging in, checking archive.org item 3 of 25, downloading and checking each result with MAME, etc.).  The Please Wait window has a Cancel button for the search and for the final download.  The archive.org search now stops checking items after a minute, and checking a result with MAME gives up after two minutes, so a slow site can no longer make the search look stuck.
  • Fixed the 'can't find default.cfg' message (when making a ROM's .map file) never appearing - an error was raised instead, so nothing seemed to happen.  Also fixed a failure to save the categories.dat file causing a second error instead of being logged.

pfeMame 3.9.1 29/09/26

PfeMame GUI

  • Fixed the Set Defaults button in the Alternate Emulators window.  It always reported ‘No emulators found in defaults file’ because the code looks for each engine wrapped in an <emulator> element, but non_mame_defaults.xml listed the fields one after another with no wrapper.  The file now wraps each engine in <emulator> (file version 1.1) and the reader accepts both layouts, so an older copy of the file still works.
  • The Set Defaults button now reads non_mame_defaults.xml from the pfeMAME folder rather than the current working folder, so it works however pfeMAME is started.
  • Added Rustrum ZX (ZX Spectrum 16K to +3 and ZX81 emulator) to the alternate emulator defaults: tape, snapshot, disk and microdrive extensions, with --frontend as the extra command.  That starts it fullscreen, Esc quits, and holding Start+Select on the gamepad for a second quits, so it can be launched and left from Tile View with a joystick.
  • Software updates are now much faster.  SourceForge limits each download connection to about 300 KB/s for anything that isn't a web browser, so the updater now downloads in 8 parallel parts (125 MB in around 40 seconds instead of 6 to 7 minutes).  The updater window shows the speed and time left, has Cancel and Retry buttons, and retries automatically if the connection drops.
  • Updates now only download the files that have changed.  The updater reads the list of files at the end of the release zip, compares it with your installed files and fetches just the changed ones - typically a few MB instead of 125 MB.  If anything unexpected happens it falls back to downloading the whole release.
  • Every update is now checked against the checksum SourceForge publishes before anything is installed, and the update check now uses SourceForge's release information rather than reading the web page.
  • Fixed a serious bug in the Linux / macOS updater that could delete your favourites, ratings, settings, ROM source logins and database cache during an update.  The updater also now cleans up its temporary files, and on Windows a failed copy is reported instead of being ignored.
  • Installed versions now keep your settings and data files in your user profile folder (%APPDATA%pfeMAME on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/pfeMAME on macOS, ~/.local/share/pfemame on Linux) so an update can never overwrite them.  They are copied there automatically the first time.  To keep everything in the pfeMAME folder instead (e.g. a copy on a USB stick), create an empty file called portable.txt in the pfeMAME folder.
  • Rewrote the ROMs database build.  MAME's machine list is now read as it streams in rather than kept as a 330 MB xmlcache.dat file (the new cache is about 5 MB), memory use has dropped from over 700 MB to under 100 MB, and the build runs in the background so the window stays usable.  A rebuild from the cache takes about a second.  The multi-processor option is no longer needed and has been removed.
  • Default slot settings now include sub-slots.  Loading the MAME defaults (or opening a system with no saved slots) now also adds the slots of each default device, e.g. the floppy drives on an IBM PC floppy controller card, to any depth.  Saved slot setups with sub-slots of sub-slots now reload correctly too.
  • The slot device drop-downs now show the device name (e.g. 5.25" double density floppy drive (525dd)), and changing a device only replaces that slot's own sub-slots - it used to delete every slot row below it.
  • Added slot presets.  You can save, load and delete named slot setups for each system, and copy the current setup as MAME command line options.
  • Backups are now a single time-stamped zip file.  You are asked whether to include your saved online ROM source logins, your current files are saved before a restore, and pfeMAME restarts after a restore so everything is reloaded.  Older backup folders can still be restored.
  • Fixed the view drop-down (All / Favorites / Exists / Watchlist) showing the Missing list in every language other than English.
  • Fixed not being able to type a capital F in the search box.  Ctrl+P now opens the pfeMAME Preferences tab, Ctrl+Shift+P the ROM preferences, and F11 the full screen video player.
  • The search box now understands field searches, e.g. cat:shooter, mfr:namco, year:1984, year:1980-1985, year:>1990, rating:>=4, runs:>10, is:fav, is:missing and is:system.  Put a - in front of a term to exclude it.  Hover over the search box for the full list.
  • Added play statistics.  pfeMAME now records how long you play each ROM and system program, shows it in the status bar when you select one, and has two new views: Recently Played and Most Played.
  • Added a software list browser (Tools tab, or right-click a system).  It lists everything in the system's software lists with its year, publisher and how well MAME supports it, shows which ones you have, and lets you play them from there.
  • Added What's New in MAME (View tab).  After you update MAME, the next database build lists the new machines, the ones that now work and the ones that have been removed.
  • ROM sets stored as folders (and CHD-only games) now show as existing, and multiple ROM folders in mame.ini (e.g. rompath roms;D:More ROMs) are now fully supported, including relative paths.
  • Fixed ROMs and system programs with &, ^, | or % in their file name (e.g. Tom&Jerry.zip) not starting.  MAME is no longer started through the Windows command shell.
  • Fixed a system's own INI file being lost if pfeMAME closed unexpectedly while a system program was running, and a system without its own INI file keeping a program's settings afterwards.  An INI file left over from a crash is now put back on start-up.
  • Fixed system program favourites being saved under the system's name, and errors when removing a system program from favourites or adding one to the watchlist.
  • Fixed the number of runs being added to whichever ROM was selected when a game finished rather than the one that was played.
  • Online ROM and image searches now check website certificates, and your ROM source logins are never sent to a different website when a download is redirected.
  • pfemame.ini and mame.ini are now saved safely so a crash can't leave a half-written file, and pfemame.ini is recreated if it is missing.
  • Fixed Make mame.ini leaving pfeMAME working from the MAME folder, and a crash if the main window was closed while it was fading in.
  • ffmpeg and ffprobe are now looked for in the pfeMAME folder and then on the system path.
  • Added an automated test suite (the tests folder - run it with python -m pytest tests).
  • Updated the language files with the new text.

MAME 0.288 29 May 2026

We’re proud to present MAME 0.288 today. We’ve already mentioned it before, but in case you forgot, we’ve migrated to C++20 and raised the requirements for development tools and operating systems. Windows users will now need an up-to-date version of Windows 10 or later. We’ve also switched to compiling our Windows x64 releases with clang, using the UCRT and libc++ libraries. This makes our Windows x64 and Arm64 releases more consistent. One other benefit of the updated runtime libraries we’re now using is that whatever was causing MAME for Windows Arm64 to be almost unusably slow with the debugger active is fixed.

There are some noticeable changes to MAME’s user interface in this release, too. The most significant is that many options are shown in a de-emphasised colour if they currently have default or inherited values. This is the opposite of the previous behaviour for the input assignments menus. The menus for controlling mounted media behave a little differently, but hopefully more intuitively. There are a couple of additional settings for how menus are handled (find them in the Miscellaneous Options menu or change them in ui.ini). There’s also a slight change to how MAME loads settings from INI files, but most users shouldn’t notice the difference.

It’s been two months since our last release, so a lot has changed. Rare Bubble System versions of Konami’s Galactic Warriors and RF2 - Red Fighter have been dumped. MAME now supports the linked play deathmatch mode in Taito’s Gunbuster over a network. The Sony SMC-777 home computer can run a reasonable selection of software from disk. If you like classic synthesisers, you’ll be thrilled to know that the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 is now working.

It’s been a big two months for computer emulation. The Epson QX-10, HP-98x6 and GRiD Compass have additional media options available. There have been a lot of small updates for the Spectrum Next that all add up. Several issues affecting the Apple II family, and particularly some of the clones, have been fixed. The Research Machines 380Z now supports stepping one instruction at a time in its debugger. Canon X-07 sound output now works with more software. And speaking of sound, the sound chips used in Macintosh models from the Macintosh II onwards should be working better than ever before.

MAME 0.287 31 Mar 2026

It’s the end of another month, which means it’s time for another MAME release! As you’d expect, MAME 0.287 includes a wide-ranging array of emulation improvements to a multitude of systems. Interesting changes this month include better Namco System 23 graphics, improved lighting for Sega Model 3, and software-controlled volume control/panning for Philips CD-i (along with improved stability).

The GRiD Compass family has received a keyboard overhaul as well as an initial DAC sound output implementation. The Apple II family now handles tricky raster effects more realistically, as well as getting a substantial software list update (metadata for the MECC collection is in much better shape). And speaking of software lists, a couple of NES prototypes have been added.

MAME Testers bugs fixed

→ NOWSZY [arcade] Shmupmame 5.3 6/03/2026

Shmupmame 5.3 6/03/2025

  • Added bio_endio's code for accurate cv1k slowdown emulation.
    • Huge thanks to bio_endio for implementing correct cache emulation which results in as far as we know pcb matching slowdown.

Shmupmame 5.11

  • hotfix: Corrected issue where Batsugun special and Daifukkatsu Loop 2 modes could be incorrectly initialized on normal sets.

Shmupmame 5.1 - 2026 nimitz - minor fixes release

Changes from 5.0:

  • sh3 memory timings back to coffeePope's build values since only the first ~30 seconds of Deathsmiles behave oddly.
  • Seems to be a GFX upload issue that only shows up in the first few seconds of play on deathsmiles.
  • Stopped injecting Game Tengoku credit switch to prevent weirdness (too many coins)
  • DDP loop 2 start now starts the player at max power as you would if playing normally.
  • DDP loop 2 start now work for both p1 and p2 start.

Changelog for version 5.0

  • Shmupmame 5.0 (sh3, psx, stv, cave 68000 and more) by nimitz 2026

Loop 2 start for the following games:

  • Batsugun special (Starts at loop 2 with max power, but “level 1”)
  • Donpachi (jp) (Starts at loop 2 with max power)
  • Dodonpachi (Starts at loop 2 with minimum power, max power not needed at all)
  • Dai-ou-Jou Black Label (also includes WL) (Starts at loop 2 with max power for both shot and laser)
  • Ketsui Ura Loop (Starts at loop 2 with max power)
  • Ketsui Omote Loop (Starts at loop 2 with standard power)
  • DaiFukkatsu 1.5 Omote Loop (Starts at loop 2 with max power)
  • List of included drivers (shmups only, with some exceptions):

Shmupmame 5 “exlusives” (current alternatives are worse, due to inaccuracies, runahead/preemtive limitations or only available in vanilla mame)

  • CV1k via single buffering (Mushihimesama, Futari, Galuda 2, Dfk, Ibara, Deathsmiles, Pink Sweets, etc..)
  • Sega STV via single buffering (Guardian Force, Radiant Silvergun, Cotton 2/boomerang, Soukyugurentai, Shienryu)
  • Sony ZN via single buffering (Brave blade, G-Darius, Raystorm, Aero Fighters special)
  • Taito G-net via single buffering (Raycrisis, Psyvariar, Shikigami no shiro, Night Raid, Xii Stag)
  • Gradius IV via single buffering (voodoo1 video driver, no artefict)

New de-lag methods in shmupmame 5

  • Cave 68000 via input injection (Dodonpachi, Esprade, Dangun feveron, Mazinger Z, Air gallet, Guwange (buffer delete)) (Donpachi and Hotdog Storm already responsive)
  • Jaleco Mega System 32 via input injection (P47 Aces, Game Tengoku, Gratia)
  • Gradius II via sprite buffer delete (the method is new, might have been de-lagged in older builds though)

De-lagged drivers ported from shmupmame 4.2 (removed hacks with visual side effects)

  • Psikyo 1st gen both injection and sprite buffer delete (Strikers 1945, Gunbird, Sengoku Ace, Tengai) (Frame advance shows 3 frames, but measured at 2 frames)
  • Namco System 1 both injection and sprite buffer delete (Galaga ’88, blast off, dangerous seed, dragon spirit (injection only))
  • Some NMK 16 shmups via sprite buffer delete (Thunder Dragon 2, Rapid Hero, Macross 2, Strahl, US AAF Mustang, Black Heart, Acrobat mission, task force harrier)
  • Psikyo 2nd gen via sprite buffer delete (Strikers 1945 2/3, Gunbird 2, Dragon Blaze, Space Bomber)
  • Mars matrix via sprite buffer delete (5 frames -> 3 frames, autosword and autofire for player 1)
  • Cps2 via sprite buffer delete (Progear, Gigawing, 1944, 19XX) *not Great Mahou/dimahou and 19XX due to visual artifacts
  • Cps1 via sprite buffer delete (3wonders, 1941, area88, carrier air wing, lost/forgotten worlds) *varth/3wonders/mercs are untouched since it results in visual artifacts
  • Jaleco megasys1 via sprite buffer delete (Chimera Beast, EDF, Cybattler, P47, Saint Dragon) Plus alpha untouched but responsive
  • Boogie wings via sprite buffer delete (unique hardware/driver)

Included vanilla responsive drivers (2 frames lag or less)

  • PGM (Ketsui, Espgaluda, Ddp Dai-ou-jou, Ddp2)
  • Konami systems (Parodius series, Gradius I/III, Twinbee series, Salamander series, Thunder cross 1/2, Xexex, Trigon)
  • Toaplan systems (Batsugun, Tatsujin/Truxton 1/2, Fling Shark, Fire Shark, Twin Cobra, Outzone, Dogyuun, Vimana, Hellfire, Zero wing)
  • Taito F3 (Rayforce, Darius Gaiden, Grid Seeker, Gekirindan, Twin Cobra 2, Space Invaders 95)
  • Taito F2 (Metal BLack, Gun & Frontier, Super Space Invaders, Megablast)
  • Seibu Systems (Raiden 1, Raiden 2/DX, Raiden Fighters 1/2/Jet, Viper Phase one)
  • Sega Sysemt 16A/B (Fantasy zone 1/2, cotton, aurail, SDI, sonic boom)
  • Neogeo shmups (some) (twinkle star, tomaday, andro dunos, viewpoint, sonic wings 2/3, pulstar, last resort, zed blade, shock troopers 1/2), the rest need testing
  • Omega Fighters & Cyvern (might need injection)
  • Irem System (R-type 1/2/Leo, Mystic Riders, Image Fight, X-multiply, Air Duel, Gallop, Dragon Breed)
  • Darius 1 & 2
  • 1942 & 1943 & 1943 kai
  • Some classics (mad planets, robotron, juno first, sky kid, xevious, zaxxon, centipede, millipede, space invaders, galaxian, galaga, gaplus, space invaders, gyruss)
  • Sammy Seta Visco hardware (Change Air blade, storm blade, vasara 1/2, ultra x weapons, twin eagle 2)
  • Nostradamus

Drivers/games unfortunately not included:

  • Most of Raizing’s 68000 games, 3-4 frames delay, recommended to play with a runahead/preemptive emulator (Mahou is included as it is responsive)
  • Dragon Saber, very laggy and buffer delete is noticable because of panning
  • Daioh (somehow very laggy even though other games on the system are fine, investigated a bit and found no easy fix)
  • Dooyong, Afega, Comad and other very low budget shmups, due to lack of interest
  • Early 80s space invaders copycats, there are hundreds of those, tried to inlcude some of the best ones

MAME 0.286 26 Feb 2026

It’s time for MAME 0.286, bringing you more adventures in emulation. This month, we’ve added support for SDL3, which will be used by default when building on macOS (the default is still SDL2 on other UNIX-like platforms). You can choose SDL2 or SDL3 by adding OSD=sdl or OSD=sdl3 to your build options, respectively. There may be some teething issues, so if you build against SDL3 and things break, let us know.

In arcade emulation, we’ve added a rare early version of Mario Bros. (which may have served as the basis for the Apple II port), the original Tecmo release of Back Fire, and the elusive Monkichicchi no Fuwafuwa Puzzle. Outside arcades, dozens of systems have seen updates over the past few weeks, including the ZX Spectrum and its descendants, the Apple II family and clones, the Epson QX-10, the Canon X-07, and the Sharp MZ-80B. There are also some nice software list updates, including the latest prototype cartridge dumps and plenty of homebrew software.
