NOSHER.NET - A HISTORY OF THE EARLY COMPUTER INDUSTRY IN 300 ADVERTS 6908

https://nosher.net/archives/computers | 2021-11-28 15:45:41

In a private room at the Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago in January 1977, Commodore launched the world's first complete "personal computer" - a microcomputer that for the first time could be taken out of the box, plugged in and used by regular people without a soldering iron. However, these machines were still expensive and they remained the preserve of businesses and wealthy hobbyists for a few years more. That's until Commodore's VIC-20 and Sinclair's ZX80 ushered in a new wave of affordable home micros at the start of the 1980s which changed everything. The market exploded from tens of thousands of machines a year to millions. Micro companies were suddenly worth $1 billion dollars and their employees were millionaires. Hundreds of companies launched hundreds of machines - the 1980 "Guide to Small Business Systems" contained details of 900 different and largely-incompatible systems. Price wars were started, old scores were settled and companies were destroyed. 8 bits made way for 16 and 32 in the space of a few years. The video games market surged and then collapsed in on itself, taking out Atari and Coleco. For a while Britain led the world in manufacture and adoption, with 80% of all computers sold in Europe being sold in the UK. Then the 8-bit market reached saturation and more companies imploded - Sinclair was sold for its name and assets only, Acorn almost didn't make it and a raft of also-rans fell by the wayside - Camputers, Dragon Data, Elan, Oric and Jupiter Cantab to name but a few. Of the 179 companies in these adverts, only 17 remain, of which 15 are the TI's, BASFs, Sanyos and Yamahas for whom micros were only ever a sideline. Arguably none, including Apple, survive as a pure computer company. Meanwhile, the sleeping giant that was IBM launched its 5150 at the end of 1981 and watched as it slowly but inevitably over the next few years became the standard. Other companies cloned it, copied and improved it and soon the only game in town was the IBM PC. From the latter half of the 1980s, every micro company and its dog was building generic beige boxes. The "wonder years" were over. This collection of nearly 300 adverts attempts to tell something of that story...

Asi odzadu? Jen pro jistotu, je to slovensky.

IT'S BEHIND YOU 6126

http://bizzley.com/ | 2021-11-28 14:40:03

Welcome to a site that's all about a book what-I-wrote called IT'S BEHIND YOU, which I'm sorry to say has absolutely nothing to do with theatres and pantomimes but everything to do with old computer games, or rather one in particular. Back in the 1980's and 90's I was what was used to be called a bedroom-coder and I made a living writing computer games for some of the simple home computers around at the time on behalf of established software companies in a self-employed or freelance capacity. IT'S BEHIND YOU is specifically about a game called R-Type I wrote back in 1988 for the then Sir-less Clive Sinclair's ZX Spectrum home computer when I was just starting out in the business and was employed (I use the term loosely) by a company called Catalyst Coders.

ELECTRONIC GAMING MONTHLY - RETROMAGS FORUM 3329

http://www.retromags.com/forums/files/category/9-electronic-gaming-monthly/ | 2021-11-28 15:24:19

This site is set up to digitally preserve video game magazines from 1999 and earlier. We do this because issues of these magazines are not readily available from publishers/content owners. While we don’t have legal permission, we operate in a way where we do not release anything that will reduce any potential income for you, or magazines that are available from you, nor do we release scans that are of a quality that may reflect poorly on you. So far this has worked, with several publishers/content owners basically ignoring our existence.

http://www.page6.org/ | 2021-11-28 15:23:19

Page 6 Magazine started off as the newsletter of Birmingham User Group (BUG), an independent club of around 100 Atari computer enthusiasts who met regularly in Birmingham, England during the 1980s [read how it started here]. Les Ellingham was appointed 'Newsletter Editor' by the group, but rather than limit the scope to a localised bulletin, Les decided to embark on production of a magazine that would be of interest to all Atari owners. After considerable effort by Les and his wife Sandy, the very first issue of Page 6 was launched in December 1982.

Having access to mostly German Amiga-magazines, I was always happy to buy other magazines while on vacation. I have found many, mostly on airports, but also at really funny places where no-one would expect to find an Amiga-magazine.

HALYCJON DAYS::DOUG NEUBAUER 2082

http://www.dadgum.com/halcyon/ | 2023-12-01 22:30:25

Halcyon Days: Interviews with Classic Computer and Video Game Programmers was released in March 1997. It was one of the first retrogaming projects to focus on lost history rather than game collecting and certainly the first entirely devoted to the game authors themselves. Now a good number of the interviewees have their own web sites, but none of them did when I started contacting them in 1995. And it was an early experiment in digital publishing: though the book used HTML for formatting, it was shipped to readers on a 3 ½" diskette for a price of $20. In 1997 this seemed odd and gutsy, but the little collection of interviews found an audience and sold a good many copies for the next five years. It was twice written up in Wired News, and was quoted or mentioned in The Dallas Morning News, The Austin Chronicle, and other major newspapers. It was paired with Susan Lammers's wonderful Programmers at Work in the Dr. Dobb's CD-ROM library. It is now 2002 and Halcyon Days has run its commercial course. I'm putting it on the web because I still think the information in the book is fantastic and inspiring, and because much of it cannot be found elsewhere. The contents and HTML have been minimally edited from the original, which is why the filenames are in all capitals, for example. But enough rambling. If you have any of the giddy anticipation that I did whenever I picked up a magazine containing an interview with Mark Turmell or Dan Bunten, then you want to start reading.
