Any videogame is enhanced by its packaging and contents. Infocom games (80s text adventures) are enhanced by the items that come with them, and the background story.
But Level 9 games went one step further, including entire novellas (a short novel) both to add atmosphere and act as copy protection. Other games did this, I have tried to collect as many possible here. Peter McBride wrote the Level 9 novellas, and did an excellent job - these novellas create a wonderful pre-atmosphere for the games.
He has given me permission to reproduce his novellas here, so for the first time here they are on-line, in hypertext format.

The VCGN - Vereniging Commodore Gebruikers Nederland is an association for users of Commodore computers in the Netherlands. The VCGN was founded in the year 1983, and was active until about the year 1996.
The VCGN was the first independent user association for users of Commodore computers in the Netherlands. The VCGN grew into the largest Commodore user association in the Netherlands, and organized monthly meetings in Rijswijk and later also in other municipalities in the Netherlands. Due to excellent contacts with Commodore Netherlands and many other companies involved in Commodore computers, scoops were often shown at the association days and hardware and software were often for sale at attractive prices at the meetings.

The release of Epoch’s Cassette Vision (カセットビジョン) console on July 30th, 1981 was a true milestone in Japan’s video game history. While not the first Japanese game console, it can be argued it was the first programmable one to have any major success, which paved the way for the Famicom. The Famicom’s release naturally led to the demise of the aging Cassette Vision, with Epoch’s Super Cassette Vision failing to take up that spot in the market it once held. The original had a solid four year run moving an estimated 500,000 units – a success when Japan’s console market was in its infancy. The system originally retailed for ¥13,500. There was also a revised version of the console called the “Jr.” shipped just days after the Nintendo Famicom at a very cheap ¥5000 price tag, which extended the console’s lifespan.

WoS includes loads of multi-format magazines as well. The interface is clean and fast, and you can browse the mags one page at a time, which is nice. The scans are often the same as on Archive.org, although not always, so worth adding to your bookmarks.

Historia gier komputerowych w Czechosłowacji w latach 80. do niedawna była jedynie przypisem do wielkiej historii tego medium, jaka rozegrała się w USA i Japonii. Jednak książka Jak obehrát železnú opona pokazuje, że w okresie normalizacji powstała w naszym kraju wyjątkowa scena gier, której analiza może wzbogacić badania nad grami komputerowymi i kulturą popularną. Rzeczywiście, lokalni programiści byli jednymi z pierwszych na świecie, którzy konsekwentnie używali gier do opowiadania osobistych historii, a także do aktywizmu politycznego. Książka Jaroslava Švelcha, pierwotnie opublikowana pod koniec 2018 roku przez MIT Press, opiera się na ponad czterdziestu wywiadach i badaniu materiałów archiwalnych, w tym zachowanych gier. Oparta na historiach lokalnych programistów-amatorów mapuje początki grania i tworzenia gier na ośmiobitowe mikrokomputery w Czechosłowacji. Opiera się na przekonaniu, że amatorzy komputerów to prototypowy przykład aktywnej publiczności i wyjątkowej społeczności fanów. Jest to zatem praca łącząca elementy historiografii z kulturoznawstwem i medioznawstwem.

Witamy na stronie poświęconej kultowemu czasopismu TOP SECRET.
TOP SECRET to pierwsze w Polsce czasopismo poświęcone w całości grom komputerowym. Wydawane od roku 1990 (to już ponad 20 lat!), kiedy prawnym środkiem płatniczym w Polsce były kasety, dyskietki 5,25 i 3,5 cala, kiedy królowały takie sprzęty jak Commodore 64, Atari, Amstrad, a posiadacz komputera klasy PC był… powiedzmy ekscentrykiem. Czasopismo ukazywało się bez większych przerw do roku 1996 (wydawane przez spółdzielnie Bajtek), kiedy to nastąpił przedwczesny zgon i co za tym wielki smutek rzeszy fanów. Na początku swego istnienia TOP SECRET wydawany był co dwa miesiące, a następnie od numeru 17 z lipca 1993 stał się miesięcznikiem.
